How to Become a Volunteer

Anne Arundel County Public Schools require all volunteers to view the volunteer orientation and complete a background check.

Orientation

To watch the volunteer orientation, click the image above. Volunteers must complete this orientation once (1x) every two years.

Background Check

To learn more about the background check and apply for either the fingerprint supported background application or the commercial background check, click here.

Once these steps are completed, the school should notify you of a completed application. Be on the lookout for requests for volunteers in your email or on our Facebook pages. You can also contact the school to request information about volunteer opportunities or you can email our volunteer coordinator at secretary@cscpto.org.

Examples of Committee-led Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Book Fair: This committee coordinates dates for the Scholastic fall and spring book fairs and works with Scholastic to execute the events. They help set up and break down the book fair, as well as volunteer during the school day fair and/or before/after school fair events.
  • Hospitality: This committee plans special treats for the staff! This includes deciding on themes (typically something each month) and securing donations/purchasing items and setting up and breaking down after each event. Among the events they plan and coordinate, there is typically a brunch for the staff on their first day back and special treats for each day of Teacher Appreciation Week in the spring. They also acknowledge/celebrate various appreciation days throughout the year.
  • 5th Grade Committee: This committee includes parents/guardians of 5th graders only. They organize events/fundraisers such as Monster Bash, candy grams, the 5th grade yearbook cover contest, yard signs, promotion ceremony, class picnic, and other activities throughout the year.
  • Boosterthon Fall Fundraiser: This is the PTO’s annual fundraiser. In 2022, we raised over $30k to fund an outdoor learning space and other school enrichment. Volunteers are needed throughout the 2 weeks prior to the race/dance-a-thon to assist with prep and on the day-of to help supervise students.
  • Holiday Shop: Help with this fun child-oriented event scheduled for early December. Members of this committee purchase items to sell, set up and break down the event, secure 5th grade volunteers to help with wrapping items and helping younger shoppers, decorate, and other roles.
  • Variety Show: We have a marvelous talent show that is always lots of fun. It’s held in the spring. Help is needed for tryouts, stage, music refreshments, video, etc.
  • Movie/Skate/Restaurant Nights: This committee plans restaurant and skate nights throughout the year. It also plans movie nights for students and families, including the set-up, execution, and break down of these events.
  • Escape from the Cape 5k Fun Run: This committee plans our annual springtime 5K fundraiser. Volunteers work with the school and community to set a date, secure spaces and sponsors, organize race day events, and execute the event.
  • STEAM Day/Night: This committee supplements the school’s Science Fair with vendors from a variety of STEM fields who engage children in fun activities related to their organizations.
  • Clubs: Parents of participating students are needed to set up, monitor classes & prepare supplies.
  • Yearbook: This committee plans all aspects of the yearbook including company used, design, and content. Also supports lovelines for the 5th grade and capture photos during special events at the school.
  • Enrichment Programs (Assemblies and Field Day): These programs include assemblies on music, arts, science and sometimes just fun! By serving on this committee, you can help explore and choose valuable programs to bring to our school.
  • Multicultural Day/Night: This committee works to secure and support volunteers to represent various cultures and perspectives for a global showcase. Volunteers include people hosting tables and performances from different countries and cultures.

Additional Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Chessie: Listen to students share CHESSIE books in the media center. Consistent schedule requested.
  • 5th Grade Drownproofing: Volunteers are needed for in water and out of water help at the Arundel Swim Center in September. Time requested: Approx. 4 hours each day for 4 days.
